Military keyword > troop > This is my Uncle Bob (Robert Lewis) of Winchester, Indiana. The picture was taken at Grandma Nan's in 1962 or thereabouts, located on RR 2 outside of Winchester. The lady is his sister Doris Schaefer. Uncle Bob was an infantryman in "F" Troop 5th Cav during WWII. He served from the Gilbert Islands to the occupation of Tokyo. He was wounded by a shotgun blast to the leg at the battle for the Manila Post Office. He always wondered how the Japanese soldier hit him instead of "Bulldog" Wilson who was standing between them. Uncle Bob had four Pacific Campaign Bronze Battle Stars and two Phillipine Bronze Battle Stars. He was in a lot of s__t but only told of what he could still laugh about. He was only 19 when he was drafted and suffered from PTSD for years afterward. He was my hero and he was my surrogate father in my youth. I loved him dearly and was fortunate to have told him so before his passing last year. He is now at rest with his beloved granddaughter Chrissy.

Bob was one of five of my uncles who served in WWII. Between them they returned with three purple hearts. All but one were combat veterans. My one uncle was fortunate to remain stateside as he was drafted late in the war. The others weren't so lucky and ended up in the s__t. I have always been thankful that all of them returned.
