Military keyword > skylab > With the current concern surrounding the crippled US spy satellite that’s falling from the sky, it reminded me of Skylab, a 78-ton space station that fell from orbit in 1979, scattering debris over the Indian Ocean and remote Australia.

In 1979, I was a Pfc., and journalist, serving in the US Army and stationed overseas with the G5/Public Affairs Office, Headquarters, 8th Infantry Division (M), West Germany.

As part of my military life, my fellow soldiers and I would fall out in early morning formation to receive our daily “marching orders.” With all the hype surrounding the pending crash of Skylab, i.e., no one knew where it was going to land, several of us from the public affairs office decided to have a little fun and showed up to formation one morning, wearing our own personal Skylab protection (see attached photos.)

Needless to say, our deflector gear did brighten up the day, putting smiles on many soldiers’ faces.
