Military keyword > ronald > Shooting snooker in the basement hall of a large hotel in Memphis. I grew up on the Eat Side of Detroit where only sissies and wimps played 8-ball. Everybody played snooker. The pool halls I visited in Detroit would have at most one 8-ball table. The rest would be snooker tables and one or two carom billiard tables. I don't remember any 8-ball tables in this particular hall.
Military keyword > ronald > Pfc. Dennis Labuda from Franklin, Illinois. Dennis was my all-time best friend in the Corps. We got into more situations together. We were both 21 at this time and downed enough beer to float the air station. Off duty if you saw me you saw Dennis or if you saw Dennis you saw me. Dennis had this infectious laugh. We could have more fun with a bag of pretzels and two bar stools. I once walked through a knife fight in a Jacksonville bar coming out of the head and didn't even know it. Dennis thought it was funnier than hell, probably the funniest thing he had ever seen and that damned laugh, whatever, the women loved Dennis but we were two dumb kids out in the big world. We passed up more opportunities for a good time because we were so blasted naive. After J-ville we both shipped out to Japan. First we staged at Camp Pendleton for two weeks and had some good times at Disneyland. We went over on the USS Breckinridge, a WWII troop ship. There were 250 Marines on a 5000 man ship. Do you think we'd get to sleep in every other bunk so we could turn over at night without getting out of bed? No , they jammed us up in the very bow of the ship 5 or 6 high. Dennis went to Iwakuni and I went to East Camp Atsugi. He went to Chu Lai and I went to Da Nang. We didn't meet up again until Camp Butler on Okinawa on our way back home. Then there was me, Dennis, Ken Saleeby, Quigley the cook and Pfc. Ruud. Again Dennis and I got into more situations on Okinawa. Some of them I couldn't repeat in mixed company if you know what I mean. Ken Saleeby became a very successful contractor in Charlotte, N.C. I believe Dennis went on to be a psychologist. Dennis, or anyone else with memories, give me a call at 586-573-9473. I'd love to talk with you.
Military keyword > ronald > Boy I wish I could still do this but my joints are a little stiffer now. I'm on the bottom and I'm holding on to the ankles of one of the "forgots" in the graduation photo.
Military keyword > ronald > Man, was I short. about an hour after this was taken my little butt was in a C-130 on my way to Okinawa.
Military keyword > ronald > Myself on the left and Bob Paul. We served together in 1966 in VMFA-312. He was flight-line and I was an electrician. We're both retired. Bob spends time as flight mechanic with the Yankee Air Force out of Willow Run Airport near Romulus, Michigan. I spend a lot of time at the computer and in my yard. That's a P-40 behind us. The picture was taken at an air show at Willow Run on July 8, 2007. This was a re-union 40 years in the making. Semper Fi, Bob.
Military keyword > ronald > This is me in 1987. My son, his best friend and I were on a ten day, eighty mile back packing trip in the Pigeon River country near Vanderbilt, Michigan. The hair's a little grayer here. Hah!! A little, you should see it now.
