The Czech Republic does not plan on withdrawing its soldiers from Iraq for the time being and will stay in the country minimally until the end of the year, Defence Ministry spokesman Andrej Cirtek said.

He was reacting to Danish PM Anders Fogh Rasmussen's statement today that Denmark will withdraw its soldiers, almost 500 of them, from Iraq by the end of August.

Czechs have been operating in Iraq within the multinational mission (MNF). Military police were in Iraq from December 2003 till January. A total of 1,200 soldiers were in Iraq to train Iraqi policemen.

At present a fresh military contingent of military policemen and an artillery brigade are operating in Iraq. Their tasks include inspection of Iraqi police in Basra, southern Iraq.

The Czech military is also represented in Baghdad, where five people have been based at the command of the NATO training mission since last December. They participate in the training of top commanders of the Iraqi military and other security forces.
