August C. “Doc” Mormino

Born in St. Louis, MO. on Sept. 2, 1924
Departed on March 7, 2007 
resided in Decatur, IL.


Surrounded by wife Annette, sons Michael, Anthony, and daughter Kathryn Sharkey, August C. (Doc) Mormino passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2007 in Decatur Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10:00 am Saturday, March 10, 2007 in St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Very Rev. James O’Shea celebrant. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 pm Friday in Moran & Goebel Funeral Home with a vigil prayer service at 4:30 pm. Entombment will be in the Pieta Mausoleum with military honors conducted by the Macon County Honor Guard. Memorials can be made to the Decatur YMCA or the American Heart Association.

“Doc” was born September 2, 1924, in St. Louis, MO the son of August P. and Liboria (Dattilo) Mormino. 
He married Annette Hogan May 12, 1952 in Chicago.

He is survived by his wife Annette, sons Michael Mormino of Edwardsville; Anthony (Ann Marie) Mormino of Yorkville; daughter Kathryn (John) Sharkey of Wheaton; grandchildren Haley Mormino, Jordan Mormino, and Samantha Mormino all of Edwardsville; Maddie Mormino, Alex Mormino, and Nicholas Mormino all of Yorkville; Colin Sharkey, Keely Sharkey both of Wheaton; Anthony (Josephine) Mormino of Florissant; special friends, Michael “Tuna” and Lynn Mc Elroy of Decatur.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Frank Mormino of St. Louis, MO.

“Doc” was a U.S. Army Veteran. He served in the 3rd Army 87th Division, Under General George S. Patton and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. His service to his Country ended in 1945.

After attending a baseball try-out camp, “Doc” was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals. 
A right-handed pitcher he pitched for their minor league system from 1946 to 1949. 
In 1951 he played professionally for the Galt Terriers in Ontario, Canada.

In 1953 “Doc” graduated from National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, IL. In 1954 he moved to Decatur, IL where he began his Chiropractic career and practiced until he retired in 1994. During these Years “Doc” was also one of the top handball players in the city of Decatur.

While he was in practice “Doc” donated his time and services to the priests and nuns of Decatur. 
Also during this time he attended to the student athletes of St. Teresa High School, where he was affectionately called “Doc”. Everyone associated with St. Teresa athletics during theses years, remembers the many hours and dedication “Doc” provided theses athletes that were his extended family.

During his time at St. Teresa, “Doc” became close friends with then Athletic Director, Joe Venturi. 
They became close friends that led to a long lasting relationship even after the Venturi’s left St. Teresa for Rockford and eventually to Pekin. Although the Venturi’s left Decatur “Doc” and Annette’s relationship continues to this day. Often “Doc” and Annette visited Joe and Norma in Pekin. Joe has since passed on.

As a result of his dedication and service to St. Teresa, “Doc” was honored for 40 years of service to the school, in a half-time ceremony on October 21, 2005.

He was a member of the American Chiropractic Association, Illinois Chiropractic Society, 
Knight of Columbus Council 577, and St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.

The Mormino family would like to offer a special thank you to the Decatur Fire Department and DMH Hospice for all their care.

The family of August C. “Doc” Mormino is being served by Moran & Goebel Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2801 N. Monroe Street.
